We stand at a pivotal moment of change in the EU, with a new legislative cycle and the challenge of balancing green goals with industrial needs. Decarbonizing agriculture and food production is central to this transition, demanding the advancement and upscaling of innovative solutions and sustainable practices.
To enhance sustainable agriculture and transform our food systems, we need to collaborate across the food value chain. Fertilizers Europe Annual Conference "The Future of Agriculture and Food Production in the EU" on 15 October 2024 in Residence Palace, Brussels was an opportunity to explore innovative approaches, address critical challenges, and forge a path towards sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.
The event organised by Fertilizers Europe with Euractiv as a media partner, saw a full house where insightful discussions highlighted the challenges and opportunities for the future of European agriculture and the fertilizer industry.
The discussions highlighted the need for a more resilient and sustainable food supply chain. Central to this is the decarbonization of the sector, supported by significant investments and the creation of a market for low-carbon products, while ensuring farmers receive the support they need.
There was a strong emphasis on the importance of combining public support with the ability to attract private capital. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) plays a crucial role in this, alongside innovation at every level – from the fertilizer industry to the farmers and the whole agri-food chain. Ensuring sustainable, affordable, and competitive food availability requires policies that carefully balance the economic, social, and environmental pillars of sustainability.
It’s clear that collaboration between stakeholders is crucial to ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for European agriculture.
