BREFs

Directive 2010/75/EU of the European Parliament and the Council on industrial emissions (IED) is the main EU instrument regulating pollutant emissions from industrial installations.

Under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), the development of Best Available Technique Reference documents (BREFs) is an important and demanding process. BREFs list the best technological processes for producing fertilizers and sets the BAT-Associated Emission Levels (BAT-AELs) which are the basis for the environmental permits for all industrial players in the EU. In order to properly evaluate the Best Available Techniques for limiting industrial emissions, it is essential to consider the specifics of each sector in terms of industrial production. In 2017 the EU Commission decided that a separate BREF for large volume inorganic chemicals (LVIC) will be developed, and it will include fertilizers. The so-called sevilla process for LVIC BREF has officially started in spring 2022 and the kickoff meeting is expected in October 2022. The whole-process will take at least three years.
